Is Batman Cute (and Does He Lactate)?

Is Batman Cute (and Does He Lactate)?

Diana is a Batman fan, and I asked her why. What’s the appeal? Her simple answer: “He’s cute.”

But I didn’t press the issue. Which Batman, after all, does she have in mind? The comic book Batman? The Adam West Batman? The Michael Keaton Batman? The Val Kilmer Batman? The Christian Bale Batman? The Crispin Glover Batman? The Gnomie Batman? I don’t know. But do I want to know? Do you want to know?

For some reason lost to the minutes since broadcast, I mentioned that bats lactate, and then I extrapolated a conclusion that maybe Batman could feasibly lactate, too, which is probably something that nobody wants to know. (Though, to be fair, it might be a heck of a complement to a bowl of Count Chocula.)

Maybe I am Batman. Maybe I lease the Prius to detract from my kick-ass Batmobile that’s hiding in the Batcave under my Bathouse.

Or maybe I’m just bat$%&# crazy! Hee, hee!

Today, I threw down the gauntlet and presented our YouTube audience with the chance to get me to undertake the infamous cinammon challenge by “liking” the live TLDR 300 times. Did the community pick it up? Did I have to endure the humiliation of yet another sisyphean task to bribe delight my audience into actively participating? You’ll have to watch the video to find out. Here are some of the things on LockerGnome.com and in our live YouTube stream that we chatted about today.

Guild Wars 2 Closed Beta Open to Applications for 48 Hours

As the highly anticipated release of Guild Wars 2 inches ever closer, ArenaNet has decided to send the call out for beta testers interested in taking part in the largest project the company has ever undertaken. Guild Wars 2 originally started its closed beta in December of 2011. Since then, only a select few have been able to take part in the early phase of testing. But now, Guild Wars 2 closed beta is open to applications for 48 hours!

Five Programs Every Onsite Support Technician Should Have

Providing onsite technical support can be very challenging. Not only are you responsible for investigating and solving issues with a customer’s computer and/or network, but you have the added burden of dealing with their additional needs. Questions about usage habits, using various pieces of software, and other miscellaneous topics tend to stream out during a support call. So, how do you keep your time on site down without sacrificing the quality of your service? You could make up an excuse that you need parts and make an appointment for a later date, or you could pack a virtual toolbox of software that can help you get the job done right. Here are some suggestions we came up with thanks to the help of Gnomie Phil Horton.

How to Use Google+ Better

Why would you use Google+ worser when you could use Google+ betterer? If you’re new to Google+ and still finding your way around, here is some advice we’ve gleaned from other LockerGnome community members on how to not only use Google+, but how to use Google+ better.

Digital Currencies Part 1: Using Digital Currency to Increase Your Capital

Even if you think you know a lot about money and can give financial advice to others with wild abandon, is your own bank account a reflection of this good advice put to prudent use, or is it a desolate, cash-strapped wasteland? Maybe learning how to use digital currency can be your ticket out of the poorhouse. Here, we investigate how to use digital currency to increase your capital.

How to Opt out of Receiving the Yellow Pages

Hate getting the Yellow Pages? You’re not alone. A recent survey conducted on behalf of the online phone directory site WhitePages.com confirmed that nearly 70% of adults in the US “rarely or never” use the phone book. Unfortunately, until recently, there have been limited methods to opt out of receiving your phone book; some cities, like Seattle, have allowed local residents to opt out of receiving local phone books, but most of the nation still receives the Yellow Pages regularly. Provided that it’s offered in your area, would you like to know how to opt out of receiving the Yellow Pages from here to eternity?

Top 10 Productivity iPhone Apps

One of the key tenets of remaining productive is to efficiently utilize your limited resources — especially time. Trying to hunt down 10 iPhone apps to be the most productive that you can be among hundreds (maybe thousands) of apps probably seems a bit… counterproductive, though. The good thing is that we hunted them down for you, so you don’t have to!

iTunes is Fine?

iTunes is Fine?

Am I the only one who hates iTunes? BenTarr should be tarred and feathered for saying that “iTunes is fine!” I’m going to have to disagree with him, even if he is a registered Gnomie. (Speaking of registered Gnomies, Kelly Ishikawa just joined the fold, and he’s offering fellow Gnomies the ability to script out a comic that he’ll turn around and illustrate. Cool, right?)

I guess that iTunes is fine if you’re also a fan of broken clocks, snoring hubbies, dialup Internet connections, exploding Ford Pintos, and dog poop.

And, like my not-so-beloved cadre of YouTube trolls, I’m not even going to justify my dislike for iTunes. But to my credit, I think iTunes does a good job of exclaiming its own demerits. Just use it for a few days and you’ll find out. Then again, you could just save yourself the heartburn and headaches and avoid it altogether. You do what you think is right!

But I hurt myself by the simple act of sleeping and rogue nose hairs are ruining my day, so what do I know? Following my advice may be hazardous to your health (or, at least, sanity). Apply sparingly! Here are some of the things on LockerGnome.com and in our live YouTube stream that we chatted about today.

How to Start Your Very Own License Plate Collection

Ever marvel over the stories a good license plate collection could tell if only it had the power of speech? As it lacks this ability, you just have to use the power of imagination. License plate collector Dan Czarnecki of Milwaukee, Wisconsin gives us his tips for how to start your very own license plate collection so your treasure trove of imagined stories can prosper!

Top Five Sites for Coordinating Events

With almost one billion users on Facebook and nearly 400 million Twitter users, it’s likely that most of your friends, clients, or fans are using social media in some capacity. While there is still something to be said for sending out hand-written invitations to certain events (you don’t see many wedding invitations on Facebook, after all), inviting people to events online is a great way to instantly receive RSVPs, as well as coordinate ticket sales if your event requires a paid ticket. Several popular sites have emerged to help coordinate invites, RSVPs, tickets, and the event check-in process, which not only eliminates the paper (which is great for those companies “going green”), but saves the hassle of coordinating these processes on your own. Here are five of our favorite sites for coordinating events.

Is It Time For a ‘Do Not Text’ Registry?

Since 2008, the federal government has had a “do not call” list, available to those of us who live in the United States of America, wherein we have the ability to opt out of spam phone calls from telemarketers. Unfortunately, current laws don’t address the issue of text spam that makes it to our cellphones, so maybe it’s high time for a “do not text” registry!

How to Balance Your Personal and Professional Life Using Social Media

Are you a professional or college student about to graduate who also uses social media on a personal level? If so, you’re undoubtedly likely aware of the fact that employers are searching for information about both your professional and personal background through your presence on social media networks like LinkedIn, Twitter, your blog, and even what is publicly available on Facebook. Unless you have created multiple profiles, you likely use one profile on each social network to represent yourself — perhaps even associating your profiles with your full, real name. Clearly, knowing how to balance your personal and professional life using social media would be of great benefit, no?

Will the Windows 8 RSS Reader Change the Way You Experience News?

RSS feeds are great for those of us who attempt to digest the vast stores of knowledge that are shared on the Internet every single day. Microsoft has taken a bold approach in support of the RSS movement with a Windows 8 Metro app simply called “News.” This app searches for active RSS feeds on a given site and gives you the opportunity to subscribe to them, making them viewable from within News on the Metro interface. This support of RSS baked right in to the operating system is a very big step for Microsoft. With the majority of the consumer market still on Windows, could the Windows 8 RSS Reader change the way we experience news?

Top 10 Gaming iPhone Apps

Gaming on the iPhone is growing rapidly and, as it does, so do the games available for the device. Games can range from intense action thrillers to simple puzzle games that help pass the time. By now, we all know the most popular game for the iPhone is Angry Birds. I cannot lie that the knock-them-down bird game is highly addicting. It’s one of the must-have games for the iPhone and, by now, if you own an iPhone, you probably have it. Here, we not only go over the most popular of gaming iPhone apps, but some of the more obscure (but equally addicting) apps available.

Looking for Plugins in All the Right Places

Looking for Plugins in All the Right Places

Ever wonder why some people feel entitled to everything the world has to offer, regardless of their contributions (or lack, thereof) to said world?

Don’t believe the hype. Just because everyone around you tells you that you’re the best [enter imagined accomplishment here] doesn’t make it so. What’s important is that you can weed out the empty compliments and faint praise to determine your own sense of self no matter what anyone else has to say about the matter. But if you think that the planet owes you some sort of reward or recognition for sitting around on your derriere spouting out not-so-clever or creative responses to YouTube videos and blog posts done by people who are trying to make the world a better place, then you probably need to reconsider your place in the pecking order of anyone needing to give a flying flip about anything you have to say.

The only thing noble about Internet trolls is that they’re king- (or queen-) sized asses.

Even Charles Manson has awesome self-esteem. Something to think about. But he’s not part of our Gnomies community, so don’t even worry about it. I’m not!

Pour me another glass of Monday juice and let’s get this party rolling! Here are some of the things on LockerGnome.com and in our live YouTube stream that we chatted about today.

How to Buy a Laptop and Salvage a Desktop

When price is no object to someone, they may not blink at paying top dollar for a raging new computer setup — even if they’ll never use it to its maximum potential. Rather than pondering why anyone would throw money around in such a seemingly wasteful manner, maybe we should just appreciate when they decide to throw their “old” systems in the direction of the needy (i.e. us)! Sherman DeForest talks about how to buy a laptop and salvage a desktop in just such a situation.

Top 10 Things to Shred

Aside from the dangers of identity theft that can be prompted by leaving personal documents sitting around, there’s also the eyesore of clutter and the possibility of turning your house into one big fire hazard. Kelly Clay talks about her experience with the Fellowes 79Ci PowerShred shredder and how she’s using it to get rid of a bunch of crap she’s been holding onto since her college days.

How to Improve Windows 7 Stability

Windows 7 may not be rock solid, but it is one of the more stable Windows releases since Windows XP reached maturity after SP2. Today, a new generation of hardware and software has been set loose on the landscape with a new set of compatibility issues that Microsoft is attempting to keep up with. The result is a potentially unstable experience. No need to worry; there are plenty of steps you can take to avoid system instability. In fact, Windows makes it possible to make your experience pretty darn rock solid. Here are some tips to help you improve Windows 7 stability.

Five Must-have Plugins for Gmail

Gmail is a great service in and of itself, featuring the ability prioritize an inbox, filter incoming email, or add labels to keep an inbox organized — even automatically. What many people don’t know, however, is that many third-party services and startups have developed — and continue to develop — extensions and plug-ins for various Web browsers of choice (usually Chrome and Firefox) that add additional functionality to a Gmail inbox that make it even better to use. If you’re looking to add a little power to your Gmail inbox, here are five must-have apps and plugins for Gmail.

Is Windows with Word on Your iPad Right for You?

Do Windows or Microsoft Office seem like they’d be out of place on the Apple iPad? You wouldn’t be alone in thinking so, but actually the pairing’s not as weird as you might imagine. The free OnLive Desktop includes most of the features found with the Windows 7 OS, as well as complete versions of the popular Microsoft Office suite including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2010. And while this option is free, there are alternatives you might consider, depending on your needs, if you want to consider if Windows with Word on your iPad is right for you.

How to Use Spreadsheets to Make Decisions

Making decisions when the situation is simple or the tradeoffs are not overly difficult is easy. We all do it all the time. But when many parameters must be considered and when the consequences of a wrong decision can be painful, then decision making can become a frightening chore. We can dither about and agonize over which option to take, or blindly select one. We do this to make a decision, any decision, and eliminate our mental anguish. Is there a better way that is cheap to implement and easy to use? Yes, and the best part is that you probably already have it on your computer. It is called a spreadsheet. You might not think of spreadsheets as tools for decision making, but by laying out data in an organized way, that is exactly what they do.

Barry Manilow Rumored to Be Junk

Barry Manilow Rumored to Be Junk

Hey! What do you know? We made it all the way to Friday.

After a week like this, making it to the end is an accomplishment. Friday is the summit of Everest, the lunar surface, and the bottom of the Mariana Trench all in one; just making it here is the culmination of an exhausting, but ultimately rewarding, journey. And a lot of you joined me for it, and for that, I am grateful. I couldn’t have made it here without you.

There are so many things I could do this weekend. I could assemble one of many LEGO sets that await my obsessive attention. I could finally compose that album of Barry Manilow covers on my Tenori-on that I’ve been threatening to do for a while. I could sail around Puget Sound in a replica of a Ming Dynasty junk. I could crash a random company picnic and win a three-legged race with Diana as my partner and seize the prize before anyone realized that I’m not that guy from accounting who nobody’s ever seen in daylight. It’s a couple of days pregnant with possibility! Oops. Did I say pregnant? Well, I think I just heard the rumor mill squeaking to life from here. I’m sure the Gnomies will regulate and set things straight. Forsooth.

Will the weekend ahead fulfill any big plans or goals that you might have, or are you just going to kick back and take some well-deserved rest and relaxation? In either case, make it count! I know I will.

Here are some of the things on LockerGnome.com and in our live YouTube stream that we chatted about today.

Tax Tips for 2012

Tax season is overwhelming for most and often people throw up their arms at the prospect of gathering all their receipts to properly record and itemize each expense. Many opt to turn in a half-baked tax return rather than spend days or weeks itemizing their tax returns. As a result many people receive greatly-reduced tax returns — or even worse, end up owing the I.R.S. because they failed to keep their finances organized throughout the year. It’s not too late to get your records in order for the April 15th tax deadline, though. Here are some tax tips, including software that may help you get your financial documents in order for the day you’ll be filling out that dreaded 1040 form.

Is Social Dating the Hot New Way to Find Your Next Hot Date?

Online dating has become mainstream, and so has social networking. In a recent white paper published by Courtland Brooks, “What is Social Dating?”, there are currently over 1500 online dating sites in the United States alone with roughly 25 million unique visitors per month. At the same time, Facebook now has almost 1 billion users. At the intersection of these two unique services are sites that are referred to as social dating.

How to Control Your Emotions Online

Sticks and stones may break your bones, but when someone says something mean to you on Facebook, Twitter or Google+, it can hurt nearly just as much. You’ve undoubtedly heard the awful, sad stories about teenagers who have committed suicide after being cyber-bullied by peers and even other adults. For these youth, mean, rude and harsh comments left on their social media profiles left them unable to control their emotions – and were likely a result of another person unable to control their emotions, too. So how can you control your emotions online?

Smartphone and Text Messages Being Used in Divorce Court

Emails and text messages introduced in our age of technological advances have introduced additional ways to spread our anger and hate. However, what people who are in the process of a divorce may not be aware of is that these new means of communications are now admissible, as evidence, in divorce court. New findings show that evidence taken from smart phones not only increased but also that the use of text messages as evidence has also increased by 94%.

Is Metro Good for Desktops?

We’ve been taking a close look at Windows 8 over the past several weeks, and one feature in particular seems to be getting all the press. The Metro interface, arguably the most significant change to Windows since the launch of Windows 95, appears to be either a love it or hate it feature. But what exactly is Metro – and is it good for desktop computers?

Lenovo Multimedia Remote with Keyboard Giveaway

Recently, we had the opportunity to test the Lenovo Multimedia Remote with Keyboard, one of the latest accessories from Lenovo. Essentially, the Lenovo remote acts as a handheld multimedia keyboard with a built-in mouse. It’s small enough to keep on your couch’s armrest, and features a wireless range of 30ft. Is Social Dating the Hot New Way to Find Your Next Hot Date?

I’ll admit – I’m no stranger to online dating. 100% of my long-term serious relationships have been a result of connecting via either social networks or online dating before meeting in person first (which seems about right considering my career of choice.) Gnomies Say the Darnedest Things!

Gnomies Say the Darnedest Things!

I know, I know. A lot of you out there are probably sick of me going on and on about how much I love the Gnomies community and how you should — and why you should — join us. But Gnomies have such a positive vibe that it’s hard not to be inspired by them. Here are a few examples of what I’m talking about, sent by actual, real-life Gnomies.

Matthew Onohan of OQ Web Solutions writes:

Hey Chris, just wanted to say thanks to you and the whole gnomesquad for offering a service like Gnomies. I’ve been a fan of yours for a long while now. I’m 23 now and I’ve been watching you on and off for years! Great content, fun to watch, and very addicting. Ive been a behind-the-scenes fan for all this time and figured it was about time to contribute back — even if it’s not much at all — by joining Gnomies.

I just want to say thanks again for this awesome feature added to a bunch of other features at LockerGnome and hopefully things keep rolling. It’s been really exciting lately!

Can’t wait until I can contribute more in some other ways in the near future; until then I’m loving being a Gnomie.

Jerry Reid writes:

Chris, I am so excited to join this network; if I didn’t have so much work to do tonight, I would stay up all night and learn about it. Unfortunately, I have to finish helping some of my customers and get ready for my day job in the morning. Your site’s customer service was so awesome and I can’t say how welcoming that is in this type of industry. I hope to get to learn all about the Gnomies world over the next couple of days and join the code camp and learn some new skills ASAP. Thanks again!

David Banther writes:

Chris, I just want to say “thank you” for making this group. I love that is much more than a paid fan club, but a group of like-minded people that can help each other. I offered on Facebook-Gnomies to help David Thompson with the accounting side of his new tech business; we are already emailing back and forth. This is awesome, Chris!

See what I mean? But even if you’re not a registered Gnomie, here are some of the things on LockerGnome.com and in our live YouTube stream that we were all able to chat about today — 100% free of charge!

Telemedicine and Telepsychiatry: Will e-Health Take Off?

Last week I was scheduled for a lab test to ascertain if my blood glucose readings were stabilized by diet and medication, however, I wasn’t sure if this test required a fasting protocol or a non-fasting one. Until recently, to determine which of these was required for an accurate test I would have had to call the doctor’s receptionist in the hopes of being connected to the nurse. If this failed, I would have been forced to leave a message on their already overloaded answering machine and hope against hope that a live person would actually return my call. However, this time I had a totally different experience that allowed me to contact and receive a prompt reply. I can’t help but wonder if we are looking at the advent of a new horizon of what is being called Telemedicine and/or Telepsychiatry.

How to Solve Most Printer Issues in Windows 7

While we many folks out there want to believe that we live in a paperless world, we’re not quite there yet. Often, I’ll need to print something in order to hand it to someone I may be meeting in person that doesn’t have a smartphone or enough trust in electronic mail to get the information over to them efficiently. Let’s face it, paper is going to be around for some time to come, and it isn’t until everyone is on the same page that we can truly free ourselves from having to saw down trees for the sake of storing and sharing information. If you’re on Windows 7, these tips might help you fix occasional burps in the printing process.

How to Improve Your Facebook Experience in Windows 7

Facebook is all over the place, and unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past five years, you’ve probably heard more than a few stories about what it can do. Facebook is undoubtedly the biggest and most significant method for people to reconnect and keep updated on what their friends and family are up to. In a sense, Facebook has redefined how we communicate. So, how do you make the most of your experience with Facebook? For the most part, the site is accessible through pretty much any browser, though there are a few tricks in Windows to make the experience just a little easier.

OS X (10.8) Mountain Lion: Unifying the Computing Experience

Within a year of Apple’s release of Lion (Mac OS X 10.7), they’re preparing to unleash Mountain Lion – providing even more of an integrated experience for those people who rely heavily on iOS devices (or, as I like to call ‘em: the gateway drugs). If you take the time to watch the teaser video that’s been posted to their web site already, you’ll likely be struck with anticipation, trepidation, or envy. The Mac is not turning into an iPad, but what is new in OS X (10.8) Mountain Lion – that we know of?
